Abstract

Both organic and inorganic flocculants are used for domestic and industrial treatments of waste water. Salts of multivalent metals like aluminium and iron are used as inorganic flocculants. Synthetic and natural polymers are used as organic flocculants. Synthetic polymers are shear degradable but bio-degradable resistant. The natural polymers are fairly shear resistant but bio-degradable. A new class of graft polymers based on polysaccharide backbone have been synthesised, characterized and tested for their flocculation abilities in the laboratory. It has been observed that these graft copolymers are very efficient, shear and bio-degradation resistant polymers to be used as commercial flocculants.
