Abstract

The devastation and loss of life resulting from major earthquakes needs no emphasis. While there is no present possibility of preventing earthquakes, their consequences could be considerably mitigated if their imminence could be predicted. This article reviews recent research on earthquake prediction in Japan—a particularly vulnerable area—and steps taken to locate and design buildings to minimize damage.
