Abstract

This chapter reviews three early control textbooks in the United Kingdom: (1) An Introduction to Servomechanisms, (2) An Introduction to the Theory of Control in Mechanical Engineering, and (3) Servomechanisms. An Introduction to Servomechanisms was the first textbook on control systems published in the UK, and it was widely used on university and technical college courses. In dealing with transient and steady state behavior, the book covers classical and operational methods of solution and error classes and also, not surprisingly, suggests that the differential analyzer and the newer forms of electronic servo-simulators are valuable means of determining transient behavior. The use of the “response vector locus” diagram (Nyquist) and the “log-gain” diagram (Bode) are also covered. The background information on An Introduction to the Theory of Control in Mechanical Engineering by Robert Hugh Macmillan and the aims of this book are provided in this chapter. Short summaries of each chapter of the book are also provided. Servomechanisms was written by John Clifford West as a text for undergraduate university students while he was a lecturer in the Electrical Engineering at the University of Manchester..
