Abstract

Abstract Contrary to what is assumed in German lexicography, Italian provianda ‘provisions, food supplyʼ is a borrowing from German and not vice versa. The numerous historical variants in German (provante, provande, provandie, proviant, etc.) have their starting point in late Latin provenda < praebenda.
