Abstract

Max Kanderske's contribution asks how domestic robots, like iRobot's famous Roomba vacuum cleaner, become domesticated robots that fit into the everyday life of their human and non-human co-habitants. In doing so, the article expands the domestication discourse to media whose motility, that is, their capability for self-induced movement, is rooted in their ability to sense, and ultimately map, their environments. Weaving netnographic findings and interview material into short vignettes, the article analyses the routes and routines that unfold between robots and users within domestic environments marked by growing IoT infrastructures and the proliferation of sensor media.
