Abstract

This article aims to identify the ultramontane conceptions of Don Antonio Joaquim de Melo, Bishop of the Diocese of Sao Paulo, on the children education by the family between 1851 and 1861, period of his episcopal service. Based on some of his pastoral letters, the research concludes that, in his conception, the children education by the family consisted of the transmission of Christian values during the childhood period, taken as trainers or conformers of a Christian society in counterpoint to a secular one, whose moral bases would be those from the Catholic doctrine of ultramontane nature, defended and implemented by the Bishop in his diocese.
