Abstract
This chapter explores the relationship between the police officers’ educational type and level with their commitment to police integrity. Using a representative sample of the police officers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, we provide an in-depth analysis of this potential relationship. The educational reform in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the late 1990s, which abolished the police high school and introduced a more university-type police academy, created quasi-experimental conditions. Thus, we can simultaneously compare the effects of both the level of police officers’ education (high school diploma, college degree) and the type of police education (police institutions, university) on the perceived level of police integrity within police organizations. We find that, while the level of police education does not have a strong and independent effect on the police officers’ views of police integrity, the type of police education does. Supervisory position also exhibits a direct and positive effect on police integrity views in about one-half of the situations.
