Abstract

ABSTRACT Social media and the Internet have brought the fight to end misogyny, sexist discrimination, exploitation, oppression, and injustices against women into the digital age. Social media affordances enable women to leverage the features and functionalities of social media platforms to publicize their message, share experiences, and generate support and empathy from other women. Through an exploratory, interpretive-inductive qualitative approach, we examined social media to document women’s digital movements and create the first database. We utilized an intersectionality lens to examine systems and structures of oppression against women and identified relevant social media affordances. We contribute to the literature on social inclusion in Information Systems research and extend knowledge on the role of social media in advancing women’s movements.
