Abstract
Seventeen strains of gliding bacteria (flexibacteria) associated with fish disease were evaluated with DNA homology techniques. The data support our earlier report that isolates from warmwater fish may be considered as a separate group from isolates of cold-water fish. DNA analysis indicates that at least four of the warmwater isolates studied are genetically identical and that one other warmwater isolate is sufficiently unrelated to these four organisms to indicate a strain, or possibly a species difference, based on the results of work with enteric bacteria. Based on a selected reference organism, results indicate three groups within the cold-water isolates, each with varying degrees of relatedness. A strain of Flexibacter columnaris, included as an unlabeled reference, demonstrated a low degree of relatedness to the labeled reference strains.Key words: DNA homology, flexibacteria, hydroxyapatite, Flexibacter columnaris
