Abstract

Fashion and style are largely the products of discursive fields where individuals with varying degrees of power can dictate trends and “proper” manners of dressing. As with other fields, bloggers and influencers have increasingly challenged the traditional fashion media’s expertise. This paper seeks to explore how influencers who give male fashion advice construct and deploy their perceived expertise. To do so, this paper uses a Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis to examine videos posted to TikTok and Instagram Reels by nine men’s fashion advice influencers. By comparing videos by multiple influencers, the paper recognizes the repeated signs and discourses which demonstrate expertise in fashion but also reproduce hegemonic discourses.
