DISCIPLINA COERCITIVA: RELATO DE ESTUDANTES UNIVERSITARIOS BRASILEIROS

Abstract:COERCIVE DISCIPLINE: ACCOUNTS OF BRAZILIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTSSocialization strategies used by parents are part of a relevant and systematic current field of research. One of its main areas focuses on the use and consequences of coercive techniques used by parents, as recent data continues to indicate that these strategies are still very common today. The object of this study was to verify the prevalence of receiving coercive disciplinary practices by means of the retrospective accounts of differing university students in the city of Curitiba, Brazil. 400 participants answered a wide-ranging questionnaire investigating practices used by their parents when they were approximately ten years old; the instrument also analysed the student’s opinions about disciplinary practices they would have with their own children. The results show that the absolute majority of participants reported having been smacked and spanked by their mothers and fathers and there was positive and statistically significant correlation between receiving coercive discipline and the belief that such practices are efficacious in bringing up children. There was no significant difference between receiving coercive discipline and the marital situation of their parents, although participants whose parents were married reported that they thought such discipline was fairer, when compared to those whose parents were separated. A considerable percentage of participants reported having been beaten, both by their mothers and their fathers, with objects such as belts and brushes, but there is no data showing correlation between the use of these practices and the level of their parents’ education. The implications of the use of coercive techniques and corporal punishment are discussed and the relationships between parental behaviour and their children’s opinions about bringing up their own children are shown. Physical punishment is still much used currently and is a controversial subject owing to the fact of parents believing that how they bring up their children is their affair and they are not open to laws or rules dictated by others.Keywords: parenting practices; coercion; family; corporal punishment.Resumo:As estratégias de socialização utilizadas pelos pais fazem parte de um relevante e sistemático campo de pesquisa atual. Um dos focos principais estuda a utilização e as conseqüências das técnicas coercitivas utilizadas pelos pais, pois dados recentes continuam apontando que tais estratégias ainda são muito comuns na atualidade. O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi verificar a prevalência de recebimento de práticas disciplinares coercitivas por meio do relato retrospectivo de diferentes estudantes universitários da cidade de Curitiba, Brasil. 400 participantes responderam um amplo questionário que investigava as práticas utilizadas por seus pais quando eles tinham aproximadamente dez anos de idade; o instrumento também analisou as opiniões dos estudantes sobre práticas disciplinares que teriam com seus próprios filhos. Os resultados mostram que a maioria absoluta dos participantes relatou que já havia recebido palmadas e surras da mãe e do pai e houve correlação positiva e estatisticamente significativa entre o recebimento de disciplina coercitiva e a crença de que essas práticas são eficazes para educar crianças. Não houve diferença significativa entre recebimento de práticas coercitivas e a situação conjugal dos pais, mas os participantes com pais casados relataram que achavam a disciplina mais justa do que aqueles com pais separados. Uma porcentagem considerável de participantes relatou que já apanhou, tanto da mãe como do pai, com objetos como cintos e escovas, mas não há dados que mostrem correlação entre a utilização dessas práticas e o nível educacional dos pais. As implicações do uso de técnicas coercitivas e de punição corporal são discutidas e mostradas as relações entre o comportamentos dos pais e as opiniões dos filhos acerca de educados de filhos. Atualmente, o castigo físico ainda é muito utilizado e polemizado pelo fato de pais acharem que podem decidir o que quiserem na educação dos seus filhos sem que outros ditem leis ou regras.Palavras-chave: prática educativas parentais; coerção; família; punição corporal.
