Abstract

This article is focused on Directed Energy Deposition (DED) Technology, a key branch of AM that’s gaining popularity in recent years. It presents an overview of DED technology, process steps, key process variables and their effect on part quality, raw materials used in DED processes and post processing of DED parts. Microstructure evolution during DED processing and resulting properties are also discussed. Various commercial DED technologies that are available today are discussed, their relative advantages and disadvantages are analyzed and various applications are showcased. Finally, markets and economic and social impact of metal AM is discussed with the help of several case studies.
