Abstract

A study of the early stage of fatigue crack growth for a very small contained fatigue crack (∼2 μm) in an ultra-fine grain size aluminium alloy (IN 9052) has been carried out. Direct in situ SEM observations revealed that for this material very small contained fatigue cracks could propagate along the shear band associated with a blunted crack tip and could close at a positive applied load.
