Abstract

Food supply and processing represent strategic sectors in the pursuit of a country's food safety. For Italy, food manufacturing also plays an important role in terms of size and performance in the national economy. The aim of this paper is to offer an economic overview of Italian food manufacturing, analyzing both macroeconomic and microeconomic trends. The results indicate an important positioning of the sector in the Italian economy. At the firm level, however, there are critical issues due to the small size of companies. Finally, while firms in the sector are very committed to the certification of their activities, the high number of product recalls for food safety risks reveals problems that need further investigation.
