Abstract

The branch of science that has undertaken the responsibility of researching religious education activities with its past and present is the science of religious education. The primary task of the science of religious education is to clarify the boundaries of the research field. The needs to be done for this, is to define the phenomenon of religious education. If we look at the literature, it will be seen that there are many definitions for religious education. However, these definitions show that religious education scholars do not agree on what the nature and scope of religious education is. In this study, a new definition proposal has been put forward by analyzing and evaluating the definitions made for religious education. In the research, it was concluded that the normative definitions made for religious education are insufficient to express the nature and scope of the reality of religious education, while descriptive definitions leave some points about the reality in question blurred.
