Digital technologies, such as social networks, smartphones, block chainsorbig data, have become an indispensable part of our lives in recent years. They have a significant impact on our daily lives, even in crucial areas such as health, finance, and education. Recognising this, organisations presently face a difficult challenge – to create consumer digital trust. It should be noted that most studies have focused on the establishment of digital trust without identifying and considering the basic definition of “digital trust”. The purpose of this article is to provide insights regarding the state of the art of digital trust, and to suggest areas for future research. Using a systematic literature review, this paper provides an overview of the literature. The most important conclusionto be derived from this study is that there is no single generally accepted definition of digital trust. Although the early research on “digital trust” can be traced back to 1996, it was only after 2016 that the number of papers on this topic increased substantially.

  • Dmitrii I Dubrov

The purpose of the article is to study digital trust and readiness to use digital technologies among adolescents and parents. To achieve this goal, an empirical validation of the construct “Digital trust and readiness to use digital technologies,” a methodology for its measurement, and a descriptive analysis of the data obtained among adolescents and parents were conducted. The descriptive data analysis showed that, for almost all indicators of digital trust and readiness to use digital technologies, both similarities and significant differences between parents and adolescents were observed. Adolescents demonstrate higher digital trust and greater readiness to use digital technologies in their daily lives compared to parents. The discussion presents possible explanations for the identified similarities and differences, as well as ways to overcome the problem of low digital trust and readiness to use digital technologies in Russia.

Building consumer engagement and digital trust in social media
  • Aug 5, 2022
  • Edyta Skarzyńska

Social media provide a place of development for many companies. It is therefore crucial to build a committed group of customers that allow for continuous development. Modern technologies can increase trust in online activities. This creates more opportunities to introduce innovative activities and expand them. By offering cooperation with external entities, companies can reach a larger group of stakeholders and build a group of potential consumers. Growing digital trust is conducive to the introduction of innovative solutions in social media that arouse the interest of new consumers. Digital trust can play a vital role in creating relationships and building engagement with consumers. Against this background, this chapter examines the perception of digital trust and building consumer engagement in social media. It describes a survey on social media activity as well as consumer engagement and digital trust. Data from 450 users of social networks were collected using a questionnaire. The results show that digital trust, consisting of trust and technology, has a significant impact on social media activity. Respondents are more willing to engage in the activities of their preferred companies on the internet if they have confidence in both the chosen brand and digital trust.

Determinants of Consumers’ Digital Trust as Drivers of the Digital Economy: Results of a Systematic Literature Review and Meta-Analysis
  • Jan 1, 2025
  • Journal of Applied Economic Research
  • Eduard O Tunkevichus

Consumer trust is one of the most important factors in the development of online services and the digital economy. Although there are many research papers devoted to the study of consumer trust, their results may depend on the industry and cultural context, as well as methodological limitations. The empirical studies assess the presence or absence of a relationship between trust and its determinants but fail to capture the wide range of factors that influence trust. A systematic literature review and content analysis may identify more determinants of consumers’ digital trust than empirical research, but this approach will not allow us to draw conclusions about the significance of the influence and combine the results of empirical studies. The limitations of the methods make it difficult to form a holistic view of the determinants of consumer trust. These limitations can be overcome by using the meta-analysis method, which allows us to combine the results of published empirical papers and statistically test the relationships between variables. Thus, the objective of this study is to identify and categorize the key factors that influence the trust of users of online services, and to assess the degree of their influence on trust. The analysis includes scientific articles from Q1-Q4 publications and leading Russian journals, as well as materials of significant scientific conferences. The selection includes studies using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The analysis covers 62 empirical studies with an aggregate sample of ~24,000 respondents. The study identifies the main determinants of consumer trust and categorizes them according to the levels of consumer perception. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in the systematization of the results of empirical studies and the development of a two-level classification of digital trust factors. The results obtained can serve as a basis for further research on digital trust in Russia. The practical significance lies in the development of a structured understanding of the factors that contribute to the development of trusting relationships between consumers and companies.

  • Julija Saveljeva + 1 more

Digital trust is increasingly crucial for successful interactions in modern digital environments. However, the existing literature lacks a unified definition and a comprehensive understanding of its core factors. This study addresses these gaps by conducting a systematic literature review to explore and synthesise existing definitions of digital trust and identify the fundamental factors that shape it. A total of 86 relevant sources were analysed, revealing that digital trust is typically conceptualised as confidence in people, processes, and technology aimed at ensuring a secure digital environment, with data protection and privacy playing critical roles. Through thematic analysis, “openness” emerged as an additional factor complementing previously established elements of the integrative model of organisational trust, such as ability, benevolence, and integrity. Based on 42 definitions, we developed a new holistic definition of digital trust. The authors evaluated its content validity, confirming its alignment with the essential factors shaping digital trust’s essence. The findings highlight the multidimensional nature of digital trust and offer an operationalised framework for future measurement and application.

In the field of education, teachers must be technologically abreast especially in time of the COVID-19 Pandemic addressing the demand of the New Normal. To build confidence and capacity in digital teaching-learning, teachers must consider developing their skills in using digital technologies in education and they must also embed the use of digital devices in the teaching-learning practice. In this premise, this research article explains the digital inequality that the teachers are experiencing and its effect on their teaching profession and on establishing among themselves the digital trust and intuition. This study also aimed to answer, “What are the digital equalities do teachers encounter?” Th teachers’ decision for digital trust and intuition is affected by the digital inequalities they are experiencing. This study draws insights from a one-page survey questionnaire to 20 selected teachers of St. Aloysius Academy of Dasmariñas representing the faculty from the 3 departments such as preschool, grade school and high school. The results of this study indicate that teachers of St. Aloysius Academy of Dasmariñas are digitally inclined as manifested by their subscriptions to various digital devices and services. The impact of the digital technology to them in terms of social, economic, political and cultural affects their decision in digital trust and intuition. Overcoming issues on digital inequality among teachers will lead to digital trust and intuition. The school, from where the teachers are employed must address the digital inequality by ensuring that all teachers have equal chances in accessing the technology-based teaching devices and by providing them capacity building trainings which are imperative for the demand of the new normal. Teachers must embrace the digital technology in the community and in their workplace and imbibe the digital trust and intuition in education.

  • Humanitarian: actual problems of the humanities and education
  • Marina D Martynova

Introduction. The individual’s application of established social practices in the digital environment faces certain difficulties caused by the wide opportunities for “honest” and “dishonest” behavior on the Internet. The high level of trust in digital technologies and the possibility of manipulating personal data, the desire to rely on “expert opinion” and unreliable information, the social need for communication and the illusion of communication in social networks, as well as other dilemmas of relationships in the digital world and operating with big data create a sense of uncertainty, instability and disunity in the perception of digital reality. The purpose of the article is to identify social and ethical aspects of trust phenomenon as an attitude of consciousness, obstacles to digital trust and identify ways to develop it. Materials and Methods. The interdisciplinary approach based on ethics of information technology, sociology, and communication theory allows us to analyze the formation of new social practices and interpret the development of a person’s value attitude to new realities of life. Research result. The following areas of actualization of the concept of “trust” in the digital world are identified as trust in data and algorithms, trust in “digital subject”, “Internet of trust” as a space of obligations and rules. The formation of the “Internet of trust” is associated with awareness of all social, moral and psychological problems associated with the process of combining online and offline environments in the social practice of an individual, where new forms of applying traditional standards of behavior should be found. Discussion and Conclusion. Postponing the rational risk analysis of digital interaction by an individual “for later” provokes the creation of situations that are critical for the individual’s well-being and security. The costs of digital trust are reduced security and creation of “traps” in public relations and social practices. Digital environment creates a situation of vulnerability of an individual, which encourages him to resort to possible measures of protection. In turn, the “Internet of trust” as a new digital reality is absolutely necessary for the effective functioning and further development of society.

The Phenomenon of “Digital Trust” in the Context of Digital Government in Russia
  • Sep 7, 2022
  • RUDN Journal of Political Science
  • Sergey G Chepelyuk

In recent years new digital technologies have become an integral part of daily life of civilians, including their interaction with government. Trust in innovation in the government sector became the most important feature of the relations between government and civilians. The main purpose of this research is to explore how the factor of civil trust influences the implementation of digital technologies in government. We studied new phenomenon - “digital trust” and made content analysis of the main programmatic and analytical documents on the realization of the digital government concept. Based on the research results, we described the impact of the trust on the digital government effectiveness, and defined the basic principles of trust building, such as openness of the digital government system for citizens, security and reliability of electronic services, two-way communication with citizens. However, Russia lacks a clear strategy on how to build “digital trust” to government services. This circumstance could become a barrier for government’s digitalization in the future.

  • David Littlewood + 1 more

PurposeThis paper aims to contribute to better understanding of where and how network concepts, theories and perspectives, organisational networks, and networking practices, are being studied and deployed in social enterprise research. This is done through a systematic review of social enterprise and networks literature in business and management journals. Key trends and developments in this literature, and gaps and limitations, are identified, culminating in discussion of what next for social enterprise and networks research. The papers in this special issue on “Social Enterprise and Networks” are introduced.Design/methodology/approachA systematic review was undertaken of social enterprise and networks literature in business and management journals. Journals sampled included all those in the Entrepreneurship and Small Business subject area of the Association of Business Schools (ABS) Academic Journal Guide 2018, the journals in the Financial Times 50 research ranking, and selected wider business and society, non-profit management and public administration journals.FindingsAnalysis of publishing patterns of social enterprise and networks research finds that such research is growing, and that varied network perspectives, concepts and theories are being deployed. Social enterprise and networks are also being studied globally, using different methodologies. Nevertheless, there remains scope for deeper theoretical engagement, and for a wider range of network theories to be used. More even geographic coverage is also needed, and further insights can be gained through use of alternative methodologies.Research limitations/implicationsDiscussions in this paper have implications for research through outlining systematically the state of current scholarship on social enterprise and networks. In so doing, insight is provided on what is known about social enterprise and networks. But also on what is not known and where further enquiry is needed. Direction is thus provided for future social enterprise and networks scholarship.Practical implicationsIn this paper, how, and the extent to which, social enterprise and networks scholarship offers implications for practice and policy is considered.Originality/valueThis paper makes a valuable contribution to social enterprise scholarship. It outlines the state of current knowledge and research on social enterprise and networks, identifying where and how relationships between social enterprise and networks have been studied, whilst also providing insights for what next in future social enterprise and networks research.

Digital trust in business ecosystem collaboration
  • Aug 5, 2022
  • Khuram Shahzad + 1 more

Inter-organizational trust has been considered as a panacea in conducting successful transactions in the business-to-business context. When different firms with different organizational objectives interact and collaborate to achieve common goals, mutual trust plays a central role, particularly in dynamic collaboration in the business ecosystem. Therefore, developing inter-organizational trust in business ecosystems by leveraging digital technologies (Internet of things, artificial intelligence, blockchain, etc.) has become imperative. This chapter explores how digital technologies and digital transformation can be leveraged to develop digital trust among business ecosystem actors. It develops a conceptual framework based on integrating relevant literature as well as collecting empirical evidence from Business Finland’s “‘Digital Trust Finland’” program. The research findings aim to contribute to the theoretical and empirical discussion by integrating and connecting literature on inter-organizational trust and digitalization with a logical argument for a cross-cutting role of digital technologies. From the managerial perspective, the propositions of this study emphasize the need to develop digital trust among collaborating partners. The proposed framework may enable decision-makers in organizations to revolutionize traditional ways of collaboration, which is unavoidable in order to survive in the fast-paced digital age.

Evaluating the Science to Inform the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Midcourse Report
  • Aug 28, 2023
  • Journal of Healthy Eating and Active Living
  • Alison Vaux-Bjerke + 2 more

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans (Guidelines) advises older adults to be as active as possible. Yet, despite the well documented benefits of physical activity just 12.8% of those ages 65 and older meet the Guidelines. To address this, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) developed a Midcourse Report focused on effective strategies to improve older adult physical activity behaviors. The first step in this process was a systematic literature review. A literature review team was contracted to examine the evidence on key settings and effective behavioral intervention strategies, as well as effective policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) approaches, to improve physical activity among older adults. The PSE search employed an equity-centered framework adapted to researching PSE approaches for improving physical activity outcomes in older adults. Sixteen thousand eight hundred and eighty-three titles and abstracts were screened, and 734 full articles were reviewed for inclusion. Of those, 64 original research articles were included for the final review to answer two questions, one (plus 5 sub-questions) focused on Settings/Strategies literature (45 studies) and one (plus 2 sub-questions) focused on PSE literature (19 studies). The literature review process identified key settings and evidence-based strategies to support older adults in becoming more physically active, and provides a foundation for the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Midcourse Report: Implementation Strategies for Older Adults. More research is needed to address how factors related to equity and psychosocial constructs influence physical activity behaviors among older adults.
