Abstract

Martin Heidegger solemnly assumed the rectorate of the University of Freiburg on 27 May 1933, delivering the famous inaugural address Die Selbstbehauptung der deutschen Universität. In the speech, he presented his programme for the revival of the University, which included the active involvement of students from whom he expected a threefold type of service – Wehrdienst, armed service, Arbeitsdienst, labour service, and Wissenschaftsdienst, knowledge service. Even though such concepts were not congruent with the main objectives of the NS-Bildungsprogramm, it reflected his involvement in the National Socialist policy of shaping the German University.
