Abstract

Drilling activity increased significantly throughout the CSD Districts covered by this report. Total number of wells drilled in Arkansas increased 9.1%, in North Louisiana 33.5%, and in East Texas 6.0%. Exploratory drilling resulted in a success of 12.0% in Arkansas, 10.3% in North Louisiana, and 16.8% in East Texas. The most important exploration and development activity in South Arkansas was within the Smackover limestone trend. In North Louisiana, drilling for Wilcox (Eocene) production accounted for 59% of the total exploratory wells drilled. Much of the activity centered in the updip shallow gas trend of Caldwell, LaSalle, and Winn Parishes. In East Texas, 4 important discoveries were made in the Smackover limestone and 3 from the Cotton Valley Formation. Cherokee Trace field, Upshur County, where both the Smackover and Cotton Valley are productive, appears to be the largest find during the year.
