Abstract

During 1969, the total number of wells drilled in North Louisiana and East Texas decreased. In contrast, the total wells drilled in Arkansas increased 23.5%. Exploratory drilling in Arkansas increased 15.9%. Drilling in Union County continued to dominate both exploration and development activities in South Arkansas. A great impetus to drilling in southern Arkansas was provided by recent Smackover discoveries. The Smackover was the objective of 84 wildcats in East Texas. Sixteen of the 34 East Texas discoveries were made in reservoir rocks of Jurassic age. Drilling for the Wilcox in Concordia, LaSalle, and Catahoula Parishes accounted for 29% of the development wells and 52% of the exploratory wells drilled in North Louisiana.
