Abstract

Summary Trees are an important constituent of the urban habitat that are of increasing importance as sustainability and quality of life climb the political agenda. The needs of stakeholders: residents, central government and its agencies, councillors and council officers, need to be considered when drawing up a ‘sustainable community strategy for trees’. It is put forward that the power and interest of residents, councillors, and council officers must be increased while that of central government and its agencies must be reduced. This paper uses an East Midlands Local Government organisation as a case study for the development of a ‘sustainable community strategy for trees’. The relative importance of stakeholders, strategy and research are discussed.
