Abstract

Shear surface acoustic waves are used to determine the depth of a non-homogeneous surface layer in elastic materials. The depth is calculated from the measured dispersion curve of the first mode of a shear surface wave for known a priori profiles of surface non-homogeneities. A variational method of calculation is proposed. The investigated depth has been calculated for linear, quadratic, step (Love), exponential and Gaussian profiles. The accuracy of the proposed method has been verified numerically for these profiles.
