Abstract
An inverse variational method for the determination of the normalized depth of a non-homogeneous surface layer in planar optical waveguides is presented. The depth is calculated from the dispersion curve of the lowest TE0 guided mode for knowna priori types of profile of the refraction index coefficientn(x). To test the accuracy of the method, linear, quadratic, step, exponential and Gaussian profiles were tested.
