Abstract
To determine the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and thereby assess the association of HPV with this disease, 50 specimens of archival, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma were studied by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). DNA was successfully extracted from 44 (88%) samples. Using consensus primers for high risk HPVs, a wide spectrum of oncogenic HPV genotypes (HPV 16, 18, 31, 33, 52b and 58) were examined. None of the samples exhibited detectable HPV DNA. Our present study does not support the potential role of HPV in the development of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Additional studies are needed to clarify the role of HPV in oncogenesis of this malignant neoplasm.
