Abstract

ABSTRACT Detection efficiencies of solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) for fission fragments have been calibrated with the help of Au-Si surface barrier detector and fission chamber. The results obtained for thin fission source are: muscovite mica: 0.936±0.003, polycarbonate foil (chaoyang Plastic Factory, China): 0.955± 0.004, polycarbonate foil (Makrofolk): 0.936±0.007, polyester: 0.939±0.003, phosphate glass: 0.876±0.005, silicate glass: 0.393±0.004 and quartz: 0.724±0.008. Corrections have been made for the effect of backscattering of fission fragments by Au-Si surface barrier de tector on the detection efficiencies with a special designed arrangement using SSNTD. The effects of backscattering of fission fragments on detection efficiencies range from o for silicate glass to 2.6% for polycarbonate foil (Chaoyan) for using Au-Si as backing material. A discussion was given to the effect of critical angles of SSNTDs on the correction for self absorption of fission fragments in thick fission sources. A formula is given to calculate the detection efficiency of SSNTDs for fission fragments from fission sources of various thickness.
