Abstract

Currently, although there has been extensive discussion on the importance of intercultural competence, there are few studies on the development of intercultural competence in the teaching of Portuguese as a foreign language. Based on the characteristics and difficulties of the basic Portuguese course in higher education, this study builds a “four in one”intercultural teaching model from four aspects, including teaching objectives, pedagogical contents, teaching strategies and evaluation methods. This study also verifies the effect of the model based on dates collected during a teaching experience in a Portuguese course for beginners, in a Chinese university, during two semesters. The results of quantitative and qualitative analysis demonstrate that this teaching model has achieved the objectives outlined, developing both linguistic competence and intercultural competence.
