Abstract

Tests for dynamic fatigue are used to investigate delayed fracture of aluminum oxide ceramics fabricated by sintering with participation of a liquid phase and containing 12 vol.% vitreous phase. The tests were conducted at different deformation rates in air and in water. It was established that the material studied had an elevated sensitivity to subcritical crack propagation compared to other aluminum oxide materials. The effect of the medium on delayed fracture is discussed using a model based on the theory of the rates of chemical reactions.
