Abstract

This article sheds light on the role played by SEEM and AS IF-clauses in The Famished Road by Ben Okri. It is argued that these constructions portray the protagonist Azaro’s “conceived reality” (Langacker 2008) and are therefore pivotal in the defamiliarization of reality at work in the novel. Those grammatical patterns create a textual world in which reality, possibility and unreality are intermingled.
