De l'immigration des maronites en Algérie : un aspect de la politique française à l'égard des communautés chrétiennes de Syrie entre 1848 et 1870

Abstract

The maronite immigration plan in Algeria was the resuit of a simple analysis : first, colonisation in Algeria sloived down ; secondly, Syrian christians were victims of muslim fanatism. Generally the fact of publicists and lebanese religious, this solution found the support of the War Ministry, in charge of Algeria. But, the Foreign Office opposed itself with firmness, objecting that it threatened French rank in Machriq. Besides, French diplomats estimated the solution of the Lebanese Christian problem was to be found in Lebanon.
