Abstract

Summary An increase in the activity of glutamic acid dehydrogenase (GDH) observed during dark starvation was inhibited when cycloheximid was added to detached leaves of Cucurbita maxima. The strong correlation between the altered enzyme activity and the endogeneous concentration of ammonia led to the assumption that ammonia is an inducing factor responsible for the synthesis of GDH. This concept was further enhanced by nutrition experiments. When ammonium salts were added to the control material kept in light, a similar increase of GDH activity associated with an altered isoenzyme pattern was observed.
