Abstract

In the socialist era before the implementation of economic reforms, Chinese society operated on the basis of the “work unit system” ( danweitizhi ). Work units were places of work for income, places of reproduction for everyday life, and basic government organizations for administration. The danwei system was formed under socialism, especially after the Cultural Revolution. The trauma of the Cultural Revolution was always combined with fear of mass revolt, and restricted the possibility of politics to develop beyond the boundary of work units. Chinese economic reform has aimed to demolish the work unit system, but many characteristics still remain in changed form.
