Abstract

This chapter defines culture and the complexity of its components as they relate to palliative care. It emphasizes recognizing how one’s own values, practices, and beliefs impact care. Finally, selected palliative care concepts and issues influenced by culture are discussed. This chapter is not intended to be a “cookbook” approach to describing behaviors and practices of different cultures as they relate to palliative care but, rather, a guide to raising awareness of the significance of cultural considerations in palliative care.
