Abstract

Abstract This chapter defines culture and its components as they relates to palliative care. It addresses cultural competence and the importance of recognizing how one’s own values, practices, and beliefs impact care. Finally, selected palliative care issues influenced by culture are discussed. This chapter is not intended to be a “cookbook” approach to describing behaviors and practices of different cultures as they relate to palliative care, but, rather, a guide to raising awareness of the significance of cultural considerations in palliative care.
