Abstract

This chapter defines culture and the complexity of its components as they relate to palliative care. It emphasizes how recognizing one’s own values, practices, and beliefs impacts the care of others. Key palliative care concepts and issues heavily influenced by culture are discussed throughout. This chapter is not intended to define behaviors and practices of different cultures as they relate to palliative care but rather to raise awareness of the significance of cultural considerations in palliative care. It is essential that nurses consider the role that culture or subcultures may play in patient and family choice and decision-making during difficult times involving serious illness and end of life.
