Abstract
Construction project delays are one of the primary challenges around the world. Bangladesh is not out of this problem. The delay of a project can be due to many reasons. By analyzing lots of research papers and practical inspections, 28 factors of delays in projects in Bangladesh have been sorted out and expressed in the Ishikawa fishbone diagram for easy understanding. To identify the critical factors, a questionnaire-based survey was carried out with the participation of owners, workers, contractors, engineers, and students involved in the relevant sector. The relative importance index (R.I.I.) was used to rank critical factors. The topmost critical factors of delay in Bangladesh’s construction works are scarcity of skilled workers, faulty organization and time management, scarcity of experienced construction managers, improper assessment of progress and cost optimization, and an improper feasibility study. Time overrun, cost overrun, poor quality, dispute, and reputation decline are the leading consequences of delays. Appointing skilled labor and a construction manager, arranging a training program, financial stability, and the availability of resources would be practical factors in reducing project delays.
