Abstract

SummaryThree grades of ABS have been plated with various nickel and chromium coatings and subjected to thermal cycling, peel testing, CASS and static and mobile outdoor exposure tests. Two proprietary pre-electroplating process sequences have been employed; both utilized electroless nickel but one deposit has been shown to be more noble than the other. In general, plastics type and pre-electroplating process sequence have been shown to influence behaviour in the above tests. Statistical analysis of the results of the thermal cycling and corrosion tests has been carried out. This has shown which variables are of most significance, the order of severity of the corrosion tests and the effect of pre-electroplating process sequence on corrosion behaviour. Equations have been obtained which enable a reasonable estimate of behaviour in an outdoor test to be obtained from the CASS test result.
