Abstract

Our objective in this study is to develop models which relate detailed structural parameters to performance, providing the means for predicting final film properties. In this work, we used different types of polyethylene (LLDPE, HDPE, and LDPE) at different process conditions in the film blowing process. The morphology of films was studied using X-ray diffraction, SEM, AFM, FTIR, and birefringence measurements. Herman's orientation factors of the films were determined via both WAXD pole figures and infrared dichroism. DSC, WAXD and SAXS were used to determine microstructural parameters including the degree of crystallinity, lamellar thickness, crystal size, length of crystal, and long spacing. By using the statistical design of experiments, a correlation between mechanical properties including tensile properties, Elmendorf tear, dart impact, and optical properties such as haze and clarity was obtained with the microstructural parameters.
