Abstract
Convalescent plasma therapy for COVID-19: a tried-and-true old strategy?
Highlights
The world is currently facing a highly contagious and fatal pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-CoV-2, which is the first pandemic caused by a coronavirus yet
A study in Hong Kong indicated that, when administered within 2 weeks of disease onset, convalescent plasma therapy (CPT) reduces the durations of fever and hospital stay and significantly decreases the mortality rate in severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) patients.[6]
As far as CPT mechanisms are concerned, it should be emphasized that so far there are several other possible direct and indirect humoral and cellular immune mechanisms by which convalescent plasma acts against virus besides neutralization.[7,8,9]
