But in fact Dorothea received mostly Cs, comments that some passages were simply no good, and hieroglyphs alongside a paragraph that was badly massed. Few comments addressed the content of her writing. For Dorothea, English A, the first-year writing course, played a part in revising her sense of herself as a college student and as a woman of intellect. Her compositions indicate that this process was occasionally painful, not only because the social norms of the academy discouraged professors from eagerly seeking her acquaintance but also because her attempts at academic writing were not affirmed, only corrected, and her personal interests and views were totally ignored. Perhaps to spare others a painful adjustment, Dorothea wrote a theme in the form of a letter of advice to future women students:
