Abstract

Abstract A peach orchard with Hale and Elberta varieties at Columbia View, Orondo, Washington, was selected for this test. Two separate plots were used in the same orchard for two different insecticide timing tests. Four single tree replicates were used in a randomized block design for each treatment. The timings were bud break (Table 1) on Apr 4 and at pink (Table 2) on Apr 11. All plots were sprayed to the point of drip (400 to 500 gal per A) with handguns at 400 to 500 psi. Five terminals were selected at random from each tree. Two counting methods were used. Early season counts were made by examining individual terminals with a binocular microscope. The last counts were made using a washing method. Twigs from each tree were placed in a gallon jar partially filled with water. Ten ml of Methyl-iso-Butyl Ketone was added to water to stimulate release of aphids. The jar was shaken five times and allowed to sit for 30 minutes, then shaken again. The twigs were removed from the jar and rinsed over an organdy cloth funnel. The remaining contents of the gallon jar were poured through the same organdy funnel. The aphids on the organdy cloth were counted under a binocular microscope. See tables for dates different sample methods were used.
