Abstract

Abstract Burley tobacco ‘Va 509’ was transplanted on May 31. All treatments were applied using 2.5 gal compressed air sprayers at 30 gal/acre. Portable CO2 tanks supplied a constant sprayer tank pressure of 30 psi. Spray treatments were applied on a 14-day schedule for a total of 5 applications, beginning June 15. Plots were 15 ft x 2 rows, each separated from another by one untreated row. Rows were spaced 40 inches apart. Plants were spaced 14 inches within rows. Four randomized complete blocks were separated by 3-ft alleys. Flea beetle damage was evaluated as feeding holes per leaf. Counts were made on the fifth leaf of width greater than 2 inches from the top of the plant. Results in the data table are averages of 5 bi-weekly 40-leaf counts beginning June 22 and ending August 19. Aphid ratings ranged from 0 (no evident infestation) to 5 (heavy infestation of the entire plant with necrosis of lower leaf bases). Ratings in the table, made August 8, are averaged for 96 plants. Soil type was Hermitage silt-loam of pH 6.3.
