Abstract

The effect of complex formation on the inhibiting activity of anthracene in polymerization of methyl methacrylate, photochemically initiated or chemically initiated without irradiation, has been investigated, using charge transfer complexes of anthracene with anhydrides of polybasic aromatic acids as examples. It was found that in chemically initiated polymerization without irradiation the charge transfer complexes exert the weakest inhibiting effect, while in photochemical polymerization the complexes are fairly strong inhibitors. It is shown by UV and luminescence spectroscopy that the mechanism of inhibition by a charge transfer complex in the irradiated system consists in copolymerization of the anthracene with loss of conjugation in the middle ring.
