Abstract
This paper deals with the future prospect of Japan pulp and paper industry and with high yield pulping and chemical pulping which are to be discussed from the wood chemistry point of view.(1)Future prospect of the Japan pulp and paper industry: The amount of paper consumption will attain 25 million T/Y in 1990–1995. To do so, the percentage of waste paper recovery and the amount of pulp and paper imports must be increased year by year.(2)High yield pulping: In addition to the improvement of pulp properties, the energy saving pulping must be developed in the future. Three subjects are discussed here, namely behavior of fiber-fiber bonding carbohydrates during mechanical pulping, modification of high yield pulping and biological high yield pulping.(3)Chemical pulping: Two aspects of alkaline pulping are discussed, namely prevention of peeling reaction and contribution of α-carbonyl group in lignin side chain to the rate of delignification. In addition, organosolv pulping is also discussed.
