Abstract
Background: Bioban CS 1246 is a formaldehydereleasing preservative recommended for metalworking fluids. Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the frequency of contact allergy to Bioban CS 1246 in routinely tested patients with dermatitis and examine its sensitizing capacity in a predictive assay. Methods: Routine patch testing with the Al-test technique and sensitization studies with the guinea pig maximization test were used. Results: Of the patients routinely patch tested, 0.9% reacted positively to Bioban CS 1246. The majority of these (8 out of 13) were contact allergic to formaldehyde. No sensitization was shown in the guinea pig. Conclusion: Bioban CS 1246 is a sensitizer in humans.
