Abstract

The distribution of the 401 orchid species recorded from West Africa is reviewed. Those of very limited distribution in Nigeria, in Nigeria plus one other country, or in one country neighbouring Nigeria, are enumerated. Such rare orchids, which are in particular need of conservation, are concentrated in relatively undisturbed, moist highlands in a region running from northern Cameroon to Mt St Isabel on Fernando Poo, with western extensions into northern Nigeria (Jos-Bauchi) and southern Nigeria (Obudu-Mambila area, and Oban Hills). Conservation procedures are suggested.
