Abstract
Hammond (1977) calls it confrontation. Egan (1986), on the other hand, calls it challenging, whereas Ellis [1975, 1977) - cited by Drydcn and Golden 1986J, Dryden (1988) and Beck (1989) call il disputing. Whatever the label affixed to the skills that enables a helper either to correct misinformation the client has about his “problem situation” (Egan 1986) or to develop new perspectives and implement new strategies for its solution, seems to me not to matter one jot. Nevertheless, in the interests of clarity it will be helpful to look at the literature a little closer.
