Abstract

Recently a new concept of truck design with longitudinally unsymmetric characteristic of primary suspension has been suggested by one of the authors. In this paper, a dynamic behavior of rail vehicles with unsymmetric suspension trucks during curve negotiation when traction or brake torque are applied, has been studied. Computer simulation using full car body models considering nonlinear characteristics of the contact force between wheel and rail were performed. Dynamic characteristics under different speed, curve radius and vehicle load were calculated. Vehicles with the new unsymmteric bogie design were compared with vehicles with conventional bogies. Superior curving performance of the new unsymmetric truck design both in terms of wheel lateral displacement and attack angle have resulted.
