Abstract
Criteria for the iterative optimization of selective excitation pulse sequences for the suppression of strong solvent signals in one- and two-dimensional NMR are discussed, and experimental and theoretical results are presented for a family of such sequences. The sequence duration and number of pulses required to achieve approximately uniform excitation over a given proportion of the spectral bandwidth are shown to increase rapidly as the proportion of the spectrum to be suppressed decreases.
