Abstract

Summary In a memory experiment, the Peterson technique was used in conjunction with 4-word lists and two recall conditions. In the phonetic condition, a word was presented which rhymed with one of the words in the list. In the ordinal condition, the word presented at recall indicates the position of the word in the to-be-learned list. In both conditions, one of the four words is to be recalled. Recall in the phonetic conditions is superior to recall in the ordinal condition. Moreover, whereas recall is better for the first and last of the four words in the ordinal condition, recall in the phonetic condition is almost maximal whatever the position in the list of the to-be-recalled word.
