Abstract
The results of calculations in the QPNM and the IBM are compared in order to elucidate the structure of excited states of deformed nuclei. It is shown that there are essential differences in describing some states in the QPNM and sdg IBM. For a common description of collective states with positive and negative parity, one should develop a version of the IBM with spdfg bosons. A better understanding of excited states of deformed nuclei necessitates experimental investigation of the structure of Knpi =02-, 03+or-, 04+or-, 12+or-, 13+or-, 22+or-, 23+or-, 24+or-, 32+or-, 33+or-, 41+ and 42+ states. Critical comments on the description of giant resonances in the IBM are given. Possible experimental verification of the formation of a giant resonance by one boson is discussed.
