Abstract
Streamers induced by a laser beam in DC positive corona discharges seem to be convenient for studying the temporal behaviour of the positive corona streamers, due to an easy controlling of the laser induced streamer onset. However, a question arises if the properties of the laser induced positive corona streamer are similar to those of the regular DC positive corona streamer. To answer that question, we compared images of the laser induced streamers to regular DC corona streamers generated in a nozzle-plane electrode geometry. The images of the laser induced streamers were examined for various laser beam geometries and positioning relative to the nozzle electrode. The results showed that the laser induced corona streamers are very similar to the regular DC corona streamers. This means that the time evolution studies of the laser induced corona streamers can be also representative for the regular DC corona streamers which are more difficult to be temporally resolved.
